Zinc Oxide: Zinc Oxide has been used topically for centuries as a skin protectant and for wound healing in many formulas. Its ability to protect in the UVA range is much higher than titanium dioxide. Zinc Oxide absorbs, rather than scatters most UVA rays (titanium dioxide primarily scatters). Therefore, ultra-fine, transparent zinc oxide (Z-Cote®) closes the window in the UVA range. Its protective abilities cover UVB and a majority of UVA radiation. Zinc Oxide may be the most used topical protection of all time.
Titanium Dioxide: A physical, inorganic mineral compound which reflects, scatters and absorbs UV radiation to 360nm.
