Heliocare 360°, Explained: Why This Sun Care Range Goes Beyond SPF
Ask a skin professional which sunscreen they actually wear, and one name comes up again and again. At our clinic, Heliocare has long been the range our therapists reach for when a client is serious about pigmentation, early ageing or simply protecting the results of good skincare. So this week we are doing something a little different: a proper tour of one sun care range, and how to choose your match from it.
Because Heliocare is not really one sunscreen. It is a family of textures built around a single, quietly remarkable ingredient.
The fern at the heart of it
Every Heliocare formula is built around Fernblock®, a standardised extract of Polypodium leucotomos, a fern that began life as an aquatic plant and, over millions of years, adapted to survive intense sun on land. Researchers have studied the extract for more than two decades, and a 2023 review of its clinical applications describes a strong safety record alongside its antioxidant, photoprotective properties.
In plain terms: the filters in a sunscreen shield your skin from UV rays, while Fernblock® works as the support act, helping skin defend itself against the free-radical stress that sun exposure generates. Filters block; Fernblock® backs up.
Why 360°?
Most sunscreens are formulated with UVB (burning) and UVA (ageing) rays in mind. The 360° in the name refers to a broader ambition: these formulas are designed to help defend against UVB, UVA, visible light and infrared-A. That matters more than it sounds, because visible light, the ordinary bright light of a South African day, can contribute to stubborn pigmentation, particularly in medium to deeper skin tones. If pigmentation is your battle, broad daily protection is not a luxury; it is the foundation, which is why sunscreen anchors our pigmentation collection and our earlier guide to fading hyperpigmentation.
The quick version
• Heliocare is a photoprotection specialist range, trusted in skin clinics worldwide, and in ours.
• Every formula carries Fernblock®, a fern-derived antioxidant extract with over two decades of research behind it.
• 360° formulas are designed to help protect against UVB, UVA, visible light and infrared-A, not just sunburn.
• There is a texture for every skin type, from featherlight gels to a tinted compact, plus a supplement for support from within.
Finding your Heliocare
This is where the range shines: the protection philosophy stays the same while the textures change. Here is how we match them in clinic.
- Normal to dry skin, wants one elegant everyday cream: Heliocare 360° Sensation SPF 50+ (R631) has a silky, cushiony finish that flatters skin that pulls tight after cleansing.
- Oily or blemish-prone: Heliocare 360° Gel Oil Free SPF 50+ (R572) dries down matte and weightless, and behaves beautifully under make-up.
- Wants light, even coverage: Heliocare 360° Color Gel Oil Free SPF 50+ (R584) adds a your-skin-but-better tint while it protects.
- Top-ups over make-up: the Heliocare 360° Oil Free Compact SPF 50+ (R519) lives in a handbag for exactly this job.
- Sensitive skin and little ones: Heliocare 360° Pediatrics Mineral SPF 50+ (R451) uses mineral filters in a gentle, family-friendly formula.
- Below the chin: Heliocare 360° Body Glow SPF 50+ (R728) protects arms, shoulders and legs with a subtle luminous finish.
- Support from within: Heliocare Ultra Capsules (R606) deliver Fernblock® orally to support your skin's resilience on high-exposure days. One important note: capsules complement your sunscreen, they never replace it.
If you would rather browse the whole family in one place, the full Heliocare collection and our wider sunscreen collection are both a click away. Still weighing up filter types themselves? Our guide to chemical versus physical sunscreen covers that ground.
Getting the most from any SPF
- Apply enough. Most of us use far less than the amount sunscreens are tested at. For the face and neck, aim for a generous quarter teaspoon.
- Make it the last skincare step. Serums and moisturiser first, SPF as the final layer before make-up.
- Reapply on exposure days. Every two hours outdoors; the compact makes this painless over make-up.
- Do not skip overcast or office days. UVA and visible light reach skin through cloud and glass, quietly feeding pigmentation year-round.
Your questions, answered
Do the capsules mean I can skip sunscreen?
No. Oral photoprotection is a supporting layer for high-exposure days, holidays and sport. Your topical SPF remains non-negotiable.
Is SPF still worth wearing in late winter?
Absolutely. South African UV levels stay significant through winter, and with spring around the corner the index climbs quickly. Daily SPF now means less pigment correction later.
Which Heliocare sits best under make-up?
The Gel Oil Free textures were made for this: they dry down smooth and grip-free. The compact then handles afternoon top-ups.
Can I use the tinted formulas instead of foundation?
Many of our clients do exactly that. The Color Gel Oil Free gives light, even coverage that reads like skin, which is often all you need for daytime.
